Non-vegetarian cuisine is avoided by the majority of people in this west Indian state, and alcohol is prohibited.
Before you decide to never visit, keep in mind that non-vegetarian food is readily available, and travellers are permitted to purchase alcohol in the state in a completely legal manner. Here’s how to go about it.

The first thing to remember is to keep track of your boarding card once you’ve arrived at your destination. Keep it safe since you’ll need it, along with other documents, to establish that you’re a tourist.
You’ll also need a pair of government IDs, such as a driver’s licence and/or a PAN card. You will also require a passport-sized photograph (soft copy will do). A corporate ID with your local address can also help if you are employed.
So, here’s what is needed:
- A boarding pass, an interstate bus ticket, a train ticket, or a receipt for a highway toll. Essentially, it’s a transit receipt that proves your arrival time.
- Two government identification cards (Aadhaar isn’t one of the alternatives). You can utilise your driver’s licence (physical card) as well as your PAN card (soft copy). A voter card can also be used.
- A soft copy of a passport-size photograph is required.
- Proof of a local address. A certificate for a hotel reservation should suffice.
How to apply?

Create a profile on the state home department’s E-permit site. Simply follow the instructions and upload soft copies of any necessary documents.

Your liquor permit will be available to download once payment has been received. When you go to the liquor store, take a printout of the same.

Validity:
Permits are valid for seven days and can be renewed three times. In other words, you can only buy alcohol for a maximum of four weeks.
Apparently, the Gujarat government does not consider someone who stays in the state for more than a month a “visitor.”
